Fredy achieved the highest honour that can be bestowed on an Australian high school mathematics student by being selected in the Australian Mathematical Olympic Team which competed at the 61st International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), held online from St Petersburg, Russia in September 2020.
"Training for mathematics takes a lot of commitment and effort. During the months leading up to the competition, I read over an extensive range of interesting and challenging publications, trained with over 20 practice papers and, most importantly, received crucial instructions and help from tutors to whom I shall remain grateful.”

He earned the honour of competing in the International Mathematical Olympiad by first winning a Medal in the Australian Mathematics Competition and then by subsequent outstanding results in competitions and further development activities at selection camps run by the Australian Mathematics Trust at The University of Melbourne and The University of Sydney.
At the IMO, Fredy achieved gold medal and the highest score in the Australian Team. This result helped Australia rise to 8th place in the world from the 105 countries that participated.
“Math underpins all scientific subjects and philosophy, to that regard it is the single most useful subject that powers the technologic and societal development of humankind."
— Fredy Yip, Year 10 student
“Mathematics and the ability to analytically think marked the progress of our species from the stone ages to the sophisticated civilisation we have today. With ongoing commitments, it is also a personal journey with our constantly deepening understanding of the world and its true nature. And with that understanding comes the increasing appreciation for the beauty it conveys, behind the thin veil of abstract and logical mathematical language. “
