The Knox Grammar School Pipes and Drums Band has won the Australian Pipe Band Championships at Brisbane Boys’ College in Queensland.
Competing in the Grade 4 Division against other schools and adult bands, the Knox band was awarded first place.
“This is a very exciting achievement for the boys – Knox last won this competition in 1967,” said Pipe Band Master Ainsley Hart.
The bands in the competition were judged by four adjudicators for their bagpiping, drumming and physical performance. Twenty-seven students represented Knox in the competition, with Year 10 student Cameron Thomson also competing in the Drum Majors’ Competition.
Established in 1946, the much loved Knox Pipes and Drums plays at commemorative events such as the Anzac Day Parade in Sydney and participates in competitions across Australia. The Senior School Pipe Band practices two mornings a week and is open to all boys. The Prep School Pipe Band is one of only a handful of junior pipe bands in Australia. The band has about 25 members from Years 3 to 6.
