Last weekend each of the six member schools within Associated Schools of NSW (CAS) marked the inaugural CAS Indigenous Round of Sport, which coincided with National Reconciliation Week.

At Knox, the members of each sport’s 1st team received a commemorative jersey designed by our Indigenous students in consultation with cultural mentor Uncle Den Barber.
These were presented on Friday morning prior to the games on Friday evening and Saturday.
Before kick-off, Uncle Den Barber conducted a smoking ceremony and Acknowledgement of Country, and our Indigenous students, plus Uncle Tim Bishop, performed a traditional dance.
Knox sports captains gifted clap sticks to their opponents from Barker, and AFL and Rugby captains gifted clap sticks to St Augustine’s and Riverview.
Head of Knox Sports & Aquatic Academy, Martin Haywood, said it was “an honour to host Barker College, St Augustine’s and Riverview for the inaugural CAS Indigenous Round of Sport.”
“Thanks to the CAS Committee for this initiative and long may it continue. All fixtures were played in the right spirit and with absolute respect for what this event meant to everyone.”
Knox Sportsmaster, Dominic Hogan, said unifying CAS member schools with an official Reconciliation Round during National Reconciliation Week was an important move.
“Knox, like other CAS member schools, took the opportunity to work with Indigenous students and Elders to explore our knowledge of story, sacred totems, music, and ceremony,” Mr Hogan said.
“The result was a uniquely designed 1st team Indigenous strip by our very own Indigenous students, as well as an Acknowledgement of Country before every 1st team fixture over the weekend.”
