Working on a community project, staying in a rural village, playing football with the locals, visiting an orangutan and sun bear sanctuary, sleeping in hammocks in the rainforest and seeing unique wildlife were among the highlights of our inaugural Knox Pymble Ladies' College expedition to Borneo, held in December.

Twenty-four students from Years 9 to 11 from Knox, together with girls from Pymble, spent almost two weeks experiencing Borneo. There was a strong focus on community service and social justice, with the students taking part in a community project at Camp Bongkud in the foothills of Mount Kinabalu.
"Each day had a different activity involving hard work," said Year 12 student Tom Paterson. "One day was making and mixing cement for building the main town road. Another was painting a local public sports change room, which was to be completed."
"Activities also included bricklaying, repairing and painting local school desks, clearing ground and making drains. We also enjoyed some fun activities with the local community, which included teaching English lessons to the young children. After work we enjoyed soccer and volleyball games against the local teams, and simply having conversations with the people in the village."
"Another unforgettable experience, was visiting the sun bear and orangutan sanctuary at the end of the trip. It was particularly special to see and hear more about these endangered animals in real-life," said Tom."
