Alex Richter and SpinalCure Australia

Alex’s message to our students:

• The power of optimism and resilience: Alex was in a mountain biking accident, which resulted in partial paralysis. But today, he’s still living his life, play rugby, mountain biking, and travelling (he recently had a ski trip in Canada with his girlfriend). Alex took the time to recover day by day and gradually regain some independence.
• The importance of mateship and kindness: Alex spoke of the support from his family, friends, school, and community. He emphasised the value of allowing himself to lean on loved ones in times of adversity. And he has the courage to continue to be adventurous in the great outdoors, as he trusts that his friends will be around him if he gets in another accident.
• Risk vs reward: When asked about the risk of getting hurt again, he admitted the risk was still there, but he was not letting the accident stop him from continuing on his journey.
• The value of science and research: Alex has recently graduated from a Masters of Human Science, and is working at an accessible resort for people with spinal cord injury, called Sargood on Collaroy. He highlighted the good work being done by SpinalCure Australia in developing research aims to restore movement.

Mr Jared Rastall (Director of Student and Staff Experience at Prep) linked Alex’s experiences to the Knoxigations units studied throughout the Prep School. These included technology modifications in Year 3’s ‘Purpose Influences Design’, medical research in Year 4’s ‘Individuals Can Create Key Turning Points in History’, and the concept of ‘Diverse Designs Create Liveable Cities’ in Year 5.

Afterwards, Prep students enjoyed a sausage sizzle lunch, and we look forward to the biking component of Ride With Richter (which was sadly postponed due to rain.
