The Knox 1sts Basketball Team has won its third CAS Championship in a row with a 87-66 win over Cranbrook last week. The CAS title is jointly shared with Trinity Grammar School.
The Rev Fr A V Smith Basketball Shield was first won in 1978 by Knox Grammar. Knox then went onto win the shield in 1979 and 1980 (joint).
This is the first time since the start of the CAS competition that this feat has been accomplished by a Knox team. Captain of Basketball Mitchell Smith has been a part of all three championships, a feat only achieved by one other Knox student, D.R. Westerway.
“We worked hard on building our team rapport both on and off the court. We knew we were the team to beat this year based off last year’s results, so we put a big emphasis on staying together during games.”
— Mitch Smith (Year 12)
“Knox has become a team that other school sides really strive to beat and see as a bench mark of the competition,” says coach Mr Reece Potter. “This meant that the 1st Basketball Team very often got the opposition’s best games, with other school’s team coming out with nothing to lose and everything to prove.”
“These factors created a scenario where every CAS was essentially a mini grand final, with the players placing high pressure on themselves to perform individually and collectively,” says Reece. For our coaching and support staff, we worked with the boys to keep a focus on giving their best effort each and every time they stepped on the court and to work together collectively to achieve both individual and team success.”
"Knox Basketball has grown exponentially in recent years to be the biggest sport at Knox and one of the largest programs in NSW,” says Ms Ellie Manou, Director of Basketball. “It is fantastic to see so many boys enjoying playing basketball at Knox and it greatly helps our program depth with developing so many keen basketball players eager to represent the school."
Knox progresses as the CAS team to the Combined Independent Schools Championship playoffs which is the pathway to the National School Championships.
