$100k, 100 years: Knox staff and students hit the magic number for Leukaemia Foundation in World’s Greatest Shave
The Leukaemia Foundation will receive more than $100,000 from the Knox team after students and staff matched their fundraising goal to the School’s centenary year.
At the time of publication, the tally was up to $103,156.73 and Knox placed third on the list of top school fundraisers across the country.
In total, 123 Knox students and staff took part in the World's Greatest Shave.
Head of Diverse Learning, Tina Moshkanbaryans, donated her hair, saying she was touched by the “injustice” of blood cancers, which are the most commonly diagnosed cancers – with at least 16 Australians dying of the disease every day.
Ms Moshkanbaryans had her head shaved in front of the Senior School during a special assembly, along with top fundraisers Brian Lee (Y11), Christian Keane (Y10), Bruce Ru (Y10), Jai Ananda (Y8), Arjun Vishnu (Y11), Zaviar Cheema (Y11), Darren Fung (Y11), Will Scodellaro (Y7) and Toby Grellman (Y10).
Teachers Dan Bailey and Andrew Dovgan also shaved their heads in support of the cause, and the event was organised by the School's Social Justice team, helmed by Prefect Kevin Hao, and Head of Diversity Justice and Stewardship Helen Clarke.
Top fundraiser, Youssef Kamil (Y12), collected more than $4,200.
The School hit the $100,000 mark on Saturday 16 March, following an exciting day of shaving on Friday – generously donated by Greg Luca, Gerard Ates and Karim Rayess of That Barber Shop Wahroonga.
Headmaster Scott James says Knox students and staff have embraced the impactful work of the Leukaemia Foundation and, each year, eagerly participate in raising money for its research and support services.
“We are thrilled to have reached this milestone fundraising amount in our centenary year,” Mr James says.
“The Leukaemia Foundation is a cause we have supported for a number of years.
“We are extremely proud of these young men and staff, and their passion for this important cause.
“It is inspiring to see our School values of integrity, compassion and courage in action when our students dedicate themselves to fundraising and taking part in the World's Greatest Shave.
