Music

Music plays a large role in the world around us and that is no different at WPS. It is through our music program that we encourage students to appreciate value, understand, develop and participate in a range of musical activities.

All students from Pre-school to Year 6 are involved in learning and appreciating music. Each class participates in weekly class music lessons where they are encouraged to discover and experience music for themselves. These class Music lessons allow students to develop a knowledge and understanding of the skills required in music and the values in Performing, Organising Sound and Music listening and appreciation. Students are encouraged to participate in a range of activities including singing, instrumental, movement, dance and creating. These skills develop all the musical concepts: Tone colour, pitch, duration, dynamics and structure.

As well as weekly class lessons, the students are given a number of opportunities to participate in music groups and activities. The students learn the basic skills required to read music and play an instrument both as a soloist and as part of a musical group. Year 1 and Year 2 are part of an instrumental program where they learn the Recorder. The skills there learn here are then developed further in Year 3 and 4 when they continue their instrumental studies on the Violin. The Recorder Consort allows children to experience being part of a musical ensemble and allows them to share their talent and enjoyment of music.

With a long tradition of choral excellence, the WPS choir continues to live up to and strive further in giving wonderful performances. The Choir, consisting of students from Year 1 to Year 6, participates in regular performances including those in Chapel, Community events and JSHAA music festivals. It is the choir that students are given the opportunity to combine their musical talents and singing skills learnt during music lessons, and have an enjoyment of creating music and performing as a multi-aged group.

All students at WPS are given the opportunity to display their musical talent and show the joy that they get from music at the End of Year Concert. Each class is involved in writing, creating and performing a wide range of musical skills which they have learnt and developed over the year.

The skills and enjoyment which the students develop when being part of a musical ensemble introduce them to the world of music-making and establishes the skills and love of music which they will have with them for the rest of their lives.
